How to host successful Toolbox Talks that carry value

By now, we all know that employee and worker safety is of the utmost importance. A lot of articles and discussions within the construction field focus on the responsibility of the employer, but in a quite logical sense, it is a shared responsibility between the two. In order for a company to have a tip-top
Health & safety management system, the employee has to be aware of the safety rules and regulations for every job, tool, or even situation in the workplace.

A definite way to communicate these safety rules and regulations is through regular safety meetings or toolbox talks. A meeting like this is the opportune time to introduce new safety policies and to remind workers of those that might have been neglected. You could also make use of such a meeting to update workers on the state and federal OSHA standards.

Even though toolbox talks are extremely important it is easy to lose the interest of your workers which could result in serious repercussions.

Here are 5 tips to follow when you’re preparing for your next meeting:

  1. Toolbox talks should be as short as possible. Keep your talk around 5-10 minutes per topic to not lose the focus of the workforce.
  2. Keep your meetings relevant. Focus on having discussions on safety with regard to current projects.
  3. Prepare for time to answer questions or do demonstrations. Also, allow workers to practice (to whom and if necessary) in the case of receiving new tools or equipment.
  4. Remember to also include rules or changes to sites and working areas.
  5. Always remind your workers to inspect tools, equipment, and PPE.
Also, encourage them to report faults and breakage as soon as possible.
